The pianist from Rio de Janeiro started playing at nightclubs in the late 50´s and soon joined the bossa nova movement. Vinhas played in the trio Bossa Três with drummer Edison Machado and bassist Tião Neto, recording three albums in 1962, in the United States. Back to Brazil, Vinhas continued performing with Bossa Três and while playing with other Brazilian artists like Jorge Ben, Quarteto em Cy, Elis Regina and others. In 1968, Vinhas released O Som Psicodélico de Luiz Carlos Vinhas, his first solo album. From the late 60´s till the early 1970´s, Vinhas played at Bar Flag, in Rio de Janeiro. That venue became famous for its jazz jam sessions and guest appearances by international singers like Sarah Vaughan and Liza Minelli. Certified as the pianist of the night , Vinhas performed in several nightclubs and regularly made records. In the 1990´s, he recorded Luiz Carlos Vinhas e a Bossa Nova and Piano na Mangueira.
