Some of you may be familiar with the renowned \u003ccountry-region w:st=\"on\"\u003eUK\u003c\/country-region\u003e jazz singer Cleo Laine, and \u003ccity w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cplace w:st=\"on\"\u003eSharon\u003c\/place\u003e\u003c\/city\u003e's voice, possibly starting from a higher point, puts me in mind of the British chanteuse. Probably the best vehicle for \u003ccity w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cplace w:st=\"on\"\u003eSharon\u003c\/place\u003e\u003c\/city\u003e on the album is the poignant penultimate song The World, a lovely piece of work. She also gets to do some reasonable scat singing, especially on Buggy Cadavers (Nirvana would have killed for a song title like that!). The rest of the band certainly get to show their chops, which are up there with the best fusion bands of the 70s. Think Return To Forever meets Zappa at his jazziest, with a bit of Etheridge era Soft Machine thrown in for good measure. Buggy Cadavers features Doug Johnson, who gets to hit all manner of vibes and similar instruments. The Nocturnal Avenger Of Human Potential (another great title) might have been what Black Sabbath would have sounded like if their formative influences were jazz rather than blues. It rocks! The last song, the 20 minute Aura\/Open Any Windows is a tour de force of jazz rock stylings and has a distinctly Black Napkins feel to it in the first 10 minutes or so, no bad thing indeed! The second half of this epic features mucho percussion and some nice scatting by \u003ccity w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cplace w:st=\"on\"\u003eSharon\u003c\/place\u003e\u003c\/city\u003e, before leading into a keyboard led improv. Before I reviewed this album I had never heard of this band, and I can well see myself returning to the album again and again. ABACUS published 4 LPs, the last 3 beeing recorded at Giorgio Moroder's MUSICLAND. But I had little interest in the tape because Abacus had musically moved away from Krautrock, having redefined and established themselves as a Progressive-Rock band. Chris and Paul Barret had recorded these songs very simply, using only one or two intruments, and in his accompanying letter, Chris asked me to complete them by adding keyboards, as well as other instruments and to do the arrangements as well. I can’t remember having listened to the tape, and it vanished for years, falling into a deep sleep at the bottom of some drawer at the Abacus Studios. After Chris’s death, it occurred to me that I had a musical reminiscence of him somewhere, and it was only after the Abacus Studios had been renovated, that I eventually found and listened to the tape. Chris and Paul had uniquely interpreted the Abacus and Grail songs and in addition to my surprise, I also felt guilty at not having done what Chris had asked me to do so many years before. I started working on the material in 2012, and it soon turned out to be somewhat of a nightmare because the demo tape had no sync-track. As a result, drums, keyboards, guitars, and brass had to be recorded live and then synchronized by hand. Additional voices, as well as a chorus, were also added to most of the songs. All of this was not only painstaking, it was time-consuming as well. And so I am now very pleased to present to our old, and maybe even new Abacus fans, this CD which contains half of the original demo tape material. Ende Dezember 2007 ist die CD Moment erschienen mit 15 neuen songs im typischen Baumstam-stil. Im September 2008 ist auf dem Green-Tree-label die 4. reissue der on tour mit 2 neuen Bonussongs erschienen. 2008 war Baumstam beim 1. Wuppertaler Kraut-Rock-Festival u.a. mit Birth Control dabei, war als support für Stan Webb´s Chicken Shack zu erleben und hat eine Südtour mit Konzerten in Frankreich erlebt.
