Flying Island’s Another Kind of Space straddles instrumental prog and jazz-fusion, pairing shreddy guitar, Pontyesque violin and organ in tightly written charts that nod to Kansas, Curved Air and Return to Forever while sneaking in a Zappa-lifted riff or two. Impeccable playing and production keep it fun, but the déjà-vu melodies render this space voyage more affectionately derivative than indispensable.
